Klipper can perform actions on the contents of the clipboard, based on whether they match a particular regular expression. There is a built-in action that acts on web addresses and files. It allows you to pass a web address that starts with “http://” or “https://” to a web browser, or a file, for example a PDF, to a compatible application like Okular.

You can write your own actions in the Actions Configuration page of the settings dialog, where you can also disable the built-in action with Offer applications for copied links and files.

You can always access the matching action menu with a button next to the item in your history. You can also choose to have an action menu pop up any time a match is placed on the clipboard by using the Automatic Action Popup Menu shortcut that you can set up on the Shortcuts page, or by checking Immediately on selection under Show action popup menu on the Action Menu page. There, with the option Automatic action menu time, you can also change how long it takes the automatic menu to close on its own if you do not act up on it.

Clipboard contents which match a regular expression can also be edited before performing an action on them. Select Edit contents... at the right of the clipboard entry, and you can change the clipboard contents in the dialog which appears, before clicking the OK button to run the appropriate action.

If you define a shortcut for Manually Invoke Action on Current Clipboard pressing this shortcut will show the appropriate pop-up menu.
